New Jersey LLC Name Search & Naming Rules (2026)
Your New Jersey LLC name has to clear the Division of Revenue's database before you can file. Here's how to search it free, the naming rules that trip people up, and how New Jersey's alternate name process differs from the DBA rules in most other states.
Search availability free with the New Jersey Business Entity Search. Your name must be distinguishable from every existing New Jersey entity and contain "LLC," "L.L.C.," or "Limited Liability Company." Not ready to file? New Jersey reserves a name for a modest fee, typically around $50. Operating under a different brand uses an alternate name registration (Form C-150G) for $50, valid 5 years and renewable — and unlike your legal LLC name, the alternate name isn't subject to the same distinguishability check.

New Jersey LLC Naming Rules
- Required designator: the name must contain "Limited Liability Company" or an abbreviation — "LLC" or "L.L.C."
- Distinguishable on the record: it can't match or closely shadow any entity registered with the Division of Revenue and Enterprise Services.
- Restricted words: terms implying regulated activity or government affiliation require proper authorization.
Check the domain before you commit: at $100 a filing, a name mistake isn't expensive to fix in New Jersey — but a branding one is. Before you fall for a name, confirm the .com (or a clean variant) is free and grab the matching social handles. The state check takes a minute; whether your real brand is available online is what actually decides if you'll be filing a $50 alternate name six months from now.

How to Search New Jersey Name Availability (Free)
Open the Business Entity Search
Available through the Division of Revenue and Enterprise Services' business portal — searches every LLC, corporation, and registered name on file.
Search core words without the designator
Search "Garden State Woodworks" rather than "Garden State Woodworks LLC" to surface the widest set of potential conflicts.
Check close variants
Minor spelling, spacing, or punctuation differences don't reliably make a name distinguishable.
File
Once your search is clean, remember New Jersey's recommended order: get your EIN first, then file the Certificate of Formation.
Name Reservation
New Jersey allows you to reserve a name before filing if you need time to prepare your formation documents, financing, or licensing. Confirm the current reservation fee and duration directly with the Division of Revenue and Enterprise Services when you file, since fee schedules can be updated. If you're filing within the next week or two, you likely don't need to reserve at all — just proceed directly to the Certificate of Formation once your search is clean.
Alternate Names Work Differently in New Jersey
This is a genuine difference from most states: when you register an alternate name (New Jersey's version of a DBA) using Form C-150G, it is not subject to the same name-availability requirements as your LLC's legal name. Registering it links the name to your entity for financial, advertising, and business purposes — but it doesn't grant exclusive rights to that name the way your actual LLC name does.
Want your LLC to operate under a different brand? File the alternate name registration with the Division of Revenue for $50 per transaction. It's valid for five years and renewable for additional five-year periods. Details in Step 7.
Ahmad Adil's Take: New Jersey's naming rules are standard for the legal LLC name itself, but the alternate name distinction is worth understanding clearly before you assume it works like a DBA elsewhere. Because the alternate name isn't checked against the same distinguishability standard, it's technically possible for two unrelated businesses to end up using similar alternate names — the registration links the name to your entity for business purposes, but it's not the same kind of exclusive claim your actual LLC name gets. If brand protection matters to you, a trademark search and filing is worth considering alongside the alternate name registration, not instead of it.
