How to use the result

  1. Answer the location, formation, responsible-party ID and authorization questions. No actual ID numbers are needed.
  2. Read the route and follow its official IRS instructions.
  3. Review the four preparation checks and keep your own supporting records securely.
  4. If you already have an EIN or an application is pending, review IRS instructions before applying again.

Understanding the route

Online eligibility is based on the current IRS tool criteria, including domestic formation, principal business location, responsible-party SSN or ITIN and authority to apply. Citizenship alone is not the test. A No answer for SSN/ITIN does not mean an EIN is unavailable. Form SS-4 instructions address responsible parties who lack and are ineligible for those numbers.

Fax and mail options remain available. Qualifying international applicants also have a telephone route. Review the IRS instructions for the correct channel, address and fax number for your circumstances. This page does not promise processing times, choose a tax classification or decide whether a new EIN is required.

Common questions

Do I need to pay the IRS for an EIN?

No. The IRS application is free. Optional paid assistance is separate.

What if I have no SSN or ITIN?

Use the SS-4 instructions and alternative routes. The line 7b exception applies when the responsible party does not have and is ineligible to obtain an SSN or ITIN. Do not substitute an invented number.

Is the international phone route based only on citizenship?

No. Check the IRS international-applicant location conditions. If your circumstances do not clearly fit, use the official instructions or contact the IRS.
