Maryland LLC Name Search & Naming Rules (2026)
Maryland's naming rules are standard — but its name reservation is not: $25 buys you just 30 days, the shortest hold in this series. With same-day online formation available, the smart play is usually to skip the reservation and just file. Here's the full picture plus a decision tool.
Search availability free with the Maryland Business Express entity search. Your name must be distinguishable from every entity on SDAT's records and contain "Limited Liability Company," "LLC," "L.L.C.," "L.C.," or "LC." Restricted words implying regulated activity (bank, trust, insurance) need regulator approval. Not ready to file? Maryland's reservation is $25 — but only 30 days. Operating under a different brand costs $25 for a trade name, renewable every 5 years.

Maryland LLC Naming Rules
- Required designator: the name must contain "Limited Liability Company" or the abbreviation "LLC," "L.L.C.," "L.C.," or "LC."
- Distinguishable on the record: it must differ from every entity on file with SDAT — punctuation tweaks and designator swaps don't create distinguishability.
- Restricted words: terms implying regulated activity — bank, trust, insurance, credit union — require the relevant Maryland regulator's approval before SDAT accepts the filing.
- No government implications: nothing suggesting a state or federal agency.
Brand check first: SDAT clearance isn't trademark protection. Run the USPTO's free search and check the .com before committing — Maryland's $25 trade name is cheap, but rebranding signage and packaging is not.
Name Checker & Reserve-or-File Advisor
Check your name's format, then answer one timing question — the tool weighs Maryland's 30-day reservation against its same-day online filing and tells you which move wins.

How to Search Maryland Name Availability (Free)
Open the Business Express entity search
SDAT's free database covers every LLC, corporation, and trade name on file in Maryland.
Search core words without the designator
Search "Chesapeake Consulting" rather than "Chesapeake Consulting LLC" to surface the widest set of conflicts, including trade names.
Assess distinguishability honestly
If an active entity differs from your name only in punctuation, spacing, or designator, expect rejection.
File promptly — online
With same-day approval available through Business Express, the gap between "available" and "mine" can be a single afternoon. Head to Step 3.
The 30-Day Reservation: Usually Skip It
Maryland holds a name for $25 — but only 30 days, the shortest reservation in this series (compare Maine's 120 days or Kentucky's renewable 120s). Combined with same-day online formation, the reservation's logic mostly collapses: if you're within 30 days of filing, you're usually within one afternoon of just forming. Reserve only in the narrow case where the name matters now but formation genuinely must wait — a funding contingency, a licensing prerequisite, a partner signature in transit.
Trade Names: $25, Renewable Every 5 Years
Your LLC can operate under a different brand by registering a trade name with SDAT for $25, renewable every five years. At this price, Maryland is one of the friendliest multi-brand states in the series — a genuine contrast with Maine's $125. One LLC can hold multiple trade names for multiple brands.
Ahmad Adil's Take: Maryland inverts the Maine advice. In Maine I tell everyone to reserve because the mail gap is weeks; in Maryland the "gap" is the time it takes to eat lunch. A 30-day hold that costs $25 protects you against a window that same-day filing already closes. My Maryland rule: if the name search comes back clean and you're serious, file the Articles that afternoon — the $25 you didn't spend on a reservation covers a quarter of your trade name budget for the next decade.
