Hawaii LLC Taxes — Step 8 of 8
The final step: understanding what you'll actually owe. As a default pass-through LLC, profit flows to your personal return — hit with federal tax, self-employment tax, and Hawaii's 12-bracket state tax, the most brackets of any state.
By default, a Hawaii LLC is a pass-through entity — profit flows to your personal 1040, taxed federally plus 15.3% self-employment tax. Hawaii then applies its own 12-bracket progressive tax, ranging from 1.4% to 11%, using a $8,000 single / $16,000 MFJ standard deduction for 2026. This is entirely separate from the General Excise Tax (Step 7), which taxes your gross business receipts, not your net profit. There's no separate Hawaii S-corp election — it follows the federal election.

How a Hawaii LLC Is Taxed by Default
An LLC itself pays no federal income tax — it's a "pass-through" entity by default. Profits flow to the owners' personal returns, where multiple layers of tax apply:
- Single-member LLCs report profit on Schedule C, attached to the owner's personal Form 1040 and Form N-11 (Hawaii resident return).
- Multi-member LLCs file Form 1065 (informational) and issue each owner a Schedule K-1 showing their share of profit.
- Self-employment tax (15.3%) applies to net profit, covering Social Security and Medicare.
- Federal income tax applies via the standard progressive brackets, after the QBI deduction and standard deduction.
- Hawaii's 12-bracket tax then applies on top, using its own $8,000/$16,000 standard deduction — Hawaii's system has the most brackets of any US state, running from 1.4% to 11%.
Federal + Hawaii Tax Estimator
Enter your expected net profit to estimate total federal + Hawaii tax as a default pass-through LLC:
Estimate only, assumes federal standard deduction (no itemizing), the simplified 20% federal QBI deduction, and half of SE tax deducted above the line. Hawaii's calculation uses profit minus half SE tax minus Hawaii's own standard deduction, applied to the official 12-bracket schedule. Doesn't include the General Excise Tax (Step 7) or the Annual Report fee. Not tax advice — consult a CPA for your specific situation.
The S-Corp Election Option
Once your LLC's profit grows substantially, electing S-corp tax status (via Form 2553) can reduce your self-employment tax burden — you pay yourself a reasonable salary (subject to payroll tax) and take remaining profit as a distribution (not subject to SE tax). This adds payroll complexity and cost, so it typically only makes sense once net profit clears roughly $60,000–$80,000/year. Hawaii has no separate state-level S-corp election — it follows whatever election you make federally. The business still owes the General Excise Tax on gross receipts regardless of your federal tax election.
Remember: GET Is Separate
Hawaii's income tax system is entirely distinct from the General Excise Tax covered in Step 7. Income tax is based on your net profit after expenses; GET is based on your gross receipts before expenses. Budget for both separately — a business with thin margins can owe meaningful GET even in a year with modest net profit.
Capital gains get a preferential rate in HawaiiLong-term capital gains are capped at a maximum 7.25% rate in Hawaii, rather than being taxed at the full 11% top ordinary rate — worth knowing if your LLC holds investments or you're planning to sell business assets.
