Under the Montana Model Registered Agents Act, your registered agent must:
Have a physical Montana street address — a P.O. box alone doesn't qualify.
Be available during normal business hours (typically 9am–5pm, Monday–Friday) to accept legal documents in person.

Montana recognizes two categories: a commercial registered agent has filed a listing statement with the Secretary of State, so you only need to list their name when you file. A noncommercial agent (like yourself or a friend) hasn't filed that statement, so you'll need to provide their full address too.

Ahmad Adil's Take: If you live in Montana and don't mind your address being public, being your own agent is a perfectly sound way to keep costs at essentially zero — especially while the annual report fee is waived. But most people who form a Montana LLC don't actually live there, and for them a commercial agent isn't optional — it's the only way to have a valid in-state address. Even Montana residents often still hire one for the privacy and to avoid being served legal papers at their kitchen table.
