Alabama LLC Registered Agent — Step 2 of 8

Every Alabama LLC must name a registered agent with a physical in-state address — the person or company who receives lawsuits and official state mail on your behalf. Alabama law allows any member or manager to serve as their own agent, but there's a real privacy trade-off to weigh first.

Alabama Registered Agent Requirements

Under Code of Alabama § 10A-1-5.31, your registered agent must:

  • Have a physical Alabama street address — a P.O. box alone doesn't qualify.
  • Reliably receive service of process and maintain the required Alabama registered office. Arrange prompt handling and forwarding so legal response deadlines are not missed.
  • Be an individual Alabama resident, or a business entity authorized to do business in Alabama.
  • Accept and forward documents promptly — including any lawsuit notices — so you don't miss a deadline.

Alabama law specifically allows any LLC member or manager to serve as the registered agent, as long as they meet the address and availability requirements — no separate license or registration is needed to act as your own agent.

Your registered agent address is searchableWhatever you choose here, your registered agent's name and address get indexed in Alabama's public Business Entity Records — the same database anyone uses to search your LLC. If you act as your own agent from a home office, that address is what shows up when someone looks up your business.

Ahmad Adil's Take: If you're a member or manager who lives in Alabama and doesn't mind your address being public, serving as your own agent is a legitimate way to save $100–$200 a year. Most Alabama business owners in this situation just do it themselves. But if you work from home and don't want your address searchable, or you're not physically in Alabama at all, a commercial agent isn't optional — it's the only way to satisfy the requirement. Northwest includes the first year free when they form your LLC, which makes the decision simple either way.

Frequently Asked Questions

Alabama LLC Registered Agent — FAQ

Can I be my own registered agent in Alabama?
An owner may serve if the person meets Alabama’s statutory eligibility and registered-office requirements and can reliably receive service of process. Ownership alone does not remove those requirements. The registered agent and office information is public.
How much does a registered agent service cost in Alabama?
Providers set their own service and renewal charges. Compare coverage, additional services and current terms. Paid service is optional when you can appoint another qualifying agent; do not assume a first-year promotion is a permanent inclusion.
Can a P.O. box be my registered agent address in Alabama?
No. Alabama requires a physical street address for your registered agent — a P.O. box alone doesn't satisfy the requirement.
Is my registered agent's information public in Alabama?
Yes. Your registered agent's name and Alabama address are part of the public record, searchable through the Secretary of State's Business Entity Records, regardless of whether you serve as your own agent or hire a commercial service.
What happens if my registered agent isn't available?
If a process server can't reach your agent, you risk missing a lawsuit notice and a resulting default judgment. Keep your agent's information current to avoid falling out of good standing.
Can I change my registered agent later?
Yes. Use the Secretary of State’s current statement-of-change or other applicable filing procedure and confirm the required acceptance, form and government fee before submitting. The fee and filing process are separate from a provider’s service charges.
Do I list my registered agent's address on the Certificate of Formation?
Yes — your agent's name and Alabama street address are required fields on the Certificate of Formation. A typo here means an amendment filing and an additional fee, so double-check before submitting. See Step 3 for the full filing walkthrough.
