- Restricted words: terms implying regulated activity — bank, trust, insurance, credit union — require the relevant regulator's blessing first.

The $30 Reservation: Cheap Insurance on a $500 Bet
File the reservation application with $30 and the Corporations Division holds your name for 60 days — renewable once for another $30, giving a maximum 120-day runway. The math is different here than in cheap states: the reservation costs 6% of your filing fee to guarantee the name that filing depends on. If launch is more than a week or two out and the name matters to your brand, reserve it. If you're filing this week, skip it — same-day fax processing closes the gap.
Business Certificates (Massachusetts' Local DBA)
Massachusetts handles trade names locally: operate under any name other than your LLC's exact legal name and you file a business certificate with the clerk of each city or town where you operate — typically $20–$65 (Boston charges $65), valid around four years, renewable.
