Iowa LLC Registered Agent — Step 2 of 8
Every Iowa LLC needs a registered agent — a person or business with a physical Iowa street address who can receive legal documents on your company's behalf. Here's how to decide between doing it yourself and hiring a service.
Your Iowa registered agent must have a physical Iowa street address — a P.O. box alone doesn't qualify — and be available during business hours to receive legal documents and official state correspondence. You can serve as your own registered agent for free if you meet these requirements, or hire a commercial service for privacy and convenience, typically $100–$300/year.

What Iowa Requires
Iowa's Revised Uniform LLC Act (Chapter 489) sets the rules for who can serve as a registered agent:
- Physical Iowa street address — a P.O. box alone is not acceptable; the agent must be reachable at a real street address in the state.
- An individual resident of Iowa — this can be you, a co-owner, a friend, or an employee, as long as they have a real Iowa street address.
- Or an authorized business entity — a commercial registered agent company with a business office in Iowa.
- Every LLC must have one continuously — from formation through dissolution, with no lapses allowed.
- Available during business hours — the agent needs to be reliably present to accept service of process (legal documents) when delivered.
Agent Decision Finder
Answer a few questions to see which option fits your situation:
Details Worth Knowing
- Your agent's address is public — it appears on your Certificate of Organization and in the state's business search, visible to anyone.
- Changing your agent requires a state filing — file a Statement of Change with the Iowa Secretary of State whenever your registered agent or their address changes.
- Your agent's address receives compliance notices — including reminders around the Biennial Report filing window.
- Commercial services typically bundle extras — mail scanning, compliance reminders, and sometimes a free year of service with LLC formation packages.
Being served legal papers at your kitchen table isn't idealIf you serve as your own registered agent and your LLC gets sued, a process server can show up at your registered address — potentially in front of clients, family, or employees. This is the main reason people choose a commercial service even when they technically qualify to do it themselves.
