Indiana LLC Registered Agent — Step 2 of 8
Every Indiana LLC needs a registered agent — a person or business with a physical Indiana street address who can receive legal documents on your company's behalf. Here's how to decide between doing it yourself and hiring a service.
Indiana permits an individual, general partnership, domestic filing entity or registered foreign entity to serve as registered agent under IC 23-0.5-4-3. Maintain the required Indiana registered office and provide the required agent information. An eligible owner can serve personally. A P.O. box alone is not an Indiana registered office. A commercial service is optional. Eligible owners or other qualifying agents can serve. Providers set their own charges, coverage and renewal terms; compare the selected service rather than a fixed price band.

What Indiana Requires
IC 23-0.5-4-1 sets the rules for who can serve as a registered agent in Indiana:
- Physical Indiana street address — a P.O. box alone is not acceptable; the agent must be reachable at a real street address in the state.
- Eligible agents — review IC 23-0.5-4-3 and the required Indiana office. Do not infer a universal age-18 condition from the registered-agent section cited here.
- Qualifying entities — commercial providers are one option; review all applicable statutory agent categories and in-state office requirements.
- Only formal business structures need one — corporations, LLCs, nonprofits, and limited partnerships require a registered agent; sole proprietorships and general partnerships don't, since they don't file formation paperwork.
- Reliable receipt and forwarding — arrange dependable handling of service of process and official correspondence at the required in-state office.
Agent Decision Finder
Answer a few questions to see which option fits your situation:
Details Worth Knowing
- Your agent's address is public — it appears on your Articles of Organization and in the state's business search, visible to anyone.
- Changing your agent is fast in Indiana — online filings through INBiz can be processed the same day or within a few business days, faster than many states.
- Your agent receives your Business Entity Report reminder — the state sends reminders 90 and 30 days before your biennial report is due, either by email or to your registered agent's address.
- Compare current service terms — confirm document handling, optional services, included periods and renewal charges.
Being served legal papers at your kitchen table isn't idealIf you serve as your own registered agent and your LLC gets sued, a process server can show up at your registered address — potentially in front of clients, family, or employees. This is the main reason people choose a commercial service even when they technically qualify to do it themselves.
- ✓Confirm registered-agent eligibility, coverage, included periods and renewal charges.
- ✓Optional formation assistance; confirm filing scope, service pricing and submission responsibilities.
- ✓Review address-use rules and privacy policies; a service does not remove all information from public filings.
- ✓Review current service terms before purchasing
