Connecticut's Naming Rules
Connecticut's LLC Act (Uniform Limited Liability Company Act) keeps naming requirements fairly conventional:
- Must include a designator — "Limited Liability Company," "LLC," "L.L.C.," or "Ltd. Liability Co."
- Must be distinguishable from every other business entity on file with the Connecticut Secretary of the State — active businesses, reserved names, and registered names alike.
- Can't falsely imply a government affiliation or a different entity type than it actually is.
- Restricted words like "Bank," "Insurance," or "University" may need extra approval or licensing before use.

Connecticut checks your name when you file your Certificate of Organization, so a separate reservation is entirely optional — most people skip it and go straight to filing. But if you're not ready to file yet and want to lock in a name:
- File an Application for Reservation of Name (Form BUS-002) online or by mail for $60.
- Holds your name for 120 days, giving you time to finish other preparations before filing.
- Also check the USPTO trademark database separately — state name availability and federal trademark protection are two different systems.
Planning to operate under a different name?If you want to market your business under a name other than your LLC's legal name, you'll file an Assumed Name Certificate (DBA). Note that in Connecticut, this filing is handled at the town/county clerk level, not the Secretary of the State — fees and exact process vary by municipality, so check with your local town clerk.
