Colorado LLC Registered Agent — Step 2 of 8
Every Colorado LLC needs a registered agent — a person or company at a real Colorado street address who's available during business hours to accept legal documents. You can act as your own agent for free, or hire a service for privacy and consistency. Here's how to decide.
A Colorado registered agent must have a physical Colorado street address (no P.O. boxes) and be available during normal business hours to accept service of process and official mail. You can be your own agent for free if you meet those requirements, appoint another Colorado resident, or hire a commercial registered agent service — typically $100–$150/year — for privacy and reliability.

What Colorado Requires
Every Colorado LLC must continuously maintain a registered agent listed with the Secretary of State. The requirements are straightforward:
- Physical Colorado street address — a P.O. box alone doesn't qualify; the agent needs a real, physical in-state location.
- Available during normal business hours — to personally accept service of process and official state correspondence.
- Individual Colorado resident (18+) or a registered entity — either qualifies, as long as the address requirement is met.
- Can be you, a co-owner, or a hired service — Colorado allows self-service as long as you meet the address and availability rules.

Changing Your Registered Agent Later
If your situation changes — you move, stop wanting your home address public, or your agent service isn't working out — you can update your registered agent any time by filing a Statement of Change with the Secretary of State online.
Your registered agent address is public recordWhatever address you list as your registered agent becomes part of Colorado's public business filings, searchable by anyone. If you're operating out of your home and don't want your personal address publicly associated with your LLC, a commercial registered agent service keeps that address off the public record entirely.
