Alaska LLC Taxes — Step 8 of 8
Here's the genuinely good news to end on: your LLC is pass-through by default, and Alaska adds no state income tax layer on top of your federal bill — none at all. That means your tax picture is refreshingly simple: federal income tax and self-employment tax, full stop. Let's break it down, with an estimator to run your own numbers.
By default, an Alaska LLC is pass-through — it pays no federal or state income tax itself; profits flow to your personal return, where you owe federal income tax + 15.3% self-employment tax. That's it — Alaska adds no state income tax on top, one of the very few states where this is true. Local sales tax may still apply if you sell in a municipality that levies one.

How an Alaska LLC Is Taxed
By default, the IRS doesn't tax an LLC as its own thing — it "passes through" the profits to the owners, who report them on their personal returns. How that works depends on how many members you have:
Treated as a "disregarded entity." You report business profit on Schedule C with your personal Form 1040.
Treated as a partnership. The LLC files Form 1065 and issues each member a Schedule K-1 for their share.
On your share of the profit, you'll owe two taxes — and that's the whole list:
- Federal income tax — at your personal marginal rate, after the standard deduction and the 20% QBI deduction many LLC owners qualify for.
- Self-employment tax (15.3%) — covering Social Security and Medicare on your active business earnings (half is deductible).
- No Alaska state income tax — nothing to add here. Alaska is one of a small handful of states with zero personal income tax.

Enter your expected annual net profit and filing status for a rough estimate — since there's no state tax layer, this is simpler than in most states we cover:
Simplified 2026 estimate using the federal standard deduction, a simplified 20% QBI deduction, and self-employment tax (half deductible). Local Sales Tax — The One Asterisk
Alaska has no statewide sales tax, but many municipalities and boroughs levy their own, typically in the 1%–7% range. If you sell goods or taxable services in one of these areas, you'll need to register with that specific municipality and collect/remit accordingly — this is entirely separate from anything covered by your LLC's federal or state income tax filings. It's the one place Alaska's "no tax" reputation has a genuine local exception.
Zero state income tax is a genuine rarityOnly a handful of US states have no personal income tax at all, and Alaska is the only one of them that also skips a statewide sales tax. If you're an Alaska resident, this is a real, ongoing financial advantage — not a marketing angle. It simply doesn't apply the same way if you're a non-resident whose home state still taxes your income regardless of where your LLC is formed.
Could an S-Corp Election Save You Money?
Once your LLC earns a healthy profit, electing S-corporation tax status can lower your self-employment tax. As an S-corp, you pay yourself a reasonable salary (subject to payroll taxes) and take the rest as distributions, which aren't subject to the 15.3% self-employment tax.
- File Form 2553 with the IRS to elect S-corp status (this is the S-corp election — not Form 8832, which is for C-corp treatment).
- Generally worth considering once net profit is consistently around $60,000–$80,000+, where SE-tax savings outweigh the added payroll and admin cost.
- Run the numbers with a CPA — payroll, reasonable-salary rules, and extra filings mean it isn't automatically a win for everyone.
