Missouri LLC Taxes Explained: Graduated ~2.00%–4.80% (2026)
Missouri's state income tax is graduated, but the top bracket kicks in at a surprisingly low income level — so most LLC owners end up close to the top rate fairly quickly. Here's every layer your LLC touches, including a distinctive federal-tax deduction Missouri offers that few other states do.
A default Missouri LLC is a pass-through: profits land on your personal return, taxed at Missouri's graduated rate, roughly 2.00%–4.80% for 2026 — with the top bracket applying above a relatively low threshold (around $8,968), so most working owners pay close to the top rate. Add 15.3% federal self-employment tax on 92.35% of net profit. The LLC owes no entity-level income tax and no franchise tax — Missouri exempts LLCs from franchise tax entirely. Missouri also lets you deduct a portion of federal income tax paid from state taxable income (up to roughly $5,000 single / $10,000 joint) and offers a 100% capital gains exemption. Sellers collect 4.225% sales tax plus local rates.

The 4 Layers of Missouri LLC Taxation
Federal: income + self-employment tax
Pass-through profits hit your 1040 at your federal bracket, plus 15.3% SE tax on 92.35% of net profit — usually the biggest line.
Missouri state income tax: graduated ~2.00%–4.80%
Several brackets, but the top rate applies above a low threshold (around $8,968 for 2026) — so most profitable LLC owners are effectively taxed close to the top marginal rate on the bulk of their income.
Entity level: nothing
No franchise tax on LLCs (Missouri exempts them entirely) and no entity income tax on default pass-through LLCs. Combined with no annual report, this is one of the lightest entity-level tax structures in the country.
Sales tax: 4.225% + local (if applicable)
State rate plus city/county add-ons, averaging around 8.44% combined. See Step 7.

The Federal-Tax Deduction (Distinctive to Missouri)
One of Missouri's more unusual features: you can deduct a portion of the federal income tax you paid from your Missouri taxable income — up to roughly $5,000 for single filers or $10,000 for joint filers for 2026. Most states don't offer this at all. It effectively softens Missouri's state tax burden for anyone who owes meaningful federal tax, and it's worth making sure your tax preparer applies it — it's easy to miss if you're used to filing in a state without this feature.
The Capital Gains Exemption
Starting with the 2025 tax year, Missouri allows 100% of income reported as capital gains for federal purposes to be subtracted when calculating Missouri adjusted gross income. If your LLC's activities generate capital gains — selling business assets, for instance — this is a meaningful state-level benefit worth discussing with your CPA, since it can substantially reduce what you owe Missouri even when the federal capital gains tax still applies in full.
The S-Corp Question (~$60–80K Profit)
An S-Corp election changes federal taxation only: reasonable salary (payroll-taxed) plus distributions that escape the 15.3% SE tax. File Form 2553 — never Form 8832, which is the C-Corp election. Break-even lands around $60–80K of consistent profit after payroll and accounting costs. Distributions still face Missouri's graduated income tax as income — the election shields SE tax, not income tax. Run your numbers in the S-Corp election guide.

Ahmad Adil's Take: Missouri's income tax gets billed as "graduated," which sounds gentler than a flat rate, but the practical reality for most profitable LLC owners is that you're paying close to the top bracket on the bulk of your income because that threshold sits so low. Budget accordingly — don't let the multi-bracket structure fool you into underestimating your bill. Where Missouri genuinely earns its reputation as founder-friendly is everywhere else: no franchise tax, no annual report, and two distinctive breaks — the federal-tax deduction and the full capital gains exemption — that most states don't offer at all. Set aside roughly 26–29% of profit for SE tax plus state income tax, and make sure whoever preps your return knows to apply Missouri's federal-tax deduction; it's an easy one to leave on the table.
