Missouri LLC Name Search & Naming Rules (2026)

Your Missouri LLC name has to clear the Secretary of State's database before you can file. Here's how to search it free, the naming rules that trip people up, when the $25 reservation is worth it, and why the $7 fictitious name filing is actually mandatory if you use one.

Quick Answer

Search availability free with the Secretary of State's business entity database. Your name must be distinguishable from every existing Missouri entity and contain a designator — "LLC," "L.L.C.," "LC," "L.C.," "limited company," or "limited liability company." It cannot contain "corporation," "incorporated," "limited partnership," or "Ltd." Not ready to file? Missouri reserves a name for $25 for 60 days, renewable twice for up to 180 days total. Operating under a different name requires a fictitious name (DBA) registration for $7 — and under Missouri law, it's actually illegal to operate under an unregistered fictitious name.

Missouri LLC Naming Rules

  • Required designator: the name must contain "limited company" or "limited liability company," or one of the abbreviations "LC," "LLC," "L.C.," or "L.L.C."
  • Distinguishable on the record: it can't match or closely shadow any entity licensed, organized, registered, or reserved with the Secretary of State — corporations, LLCs, limited partnerships, LLPs, and LLLPs all count.
  • Restricted words: the name cannot contain "corporation," "incorporated," "limited partnership," "limited liability partnership," "limited liability limited partnership," or "Ltd." — or anything implying it's a government agency or organized for a purpose not stated in its Articles.

Check the domain before you commit: at $50 a filing, a name mistake isn't expensive to fix in Missouri — but a branding one is. Before you fall for a name, confirm the .com (or a clean variant) is free and grab the matching social handles. The state check takes a minute; whether your real brand is available online is what actually decides if you'll be filing a $7 fictitious name six months from now.

Format check + reservation guidance · not a substitute for the SOS search

Availability is determined solely by the Missouri Secretary of State \u2014 run the official business entity search before filing or reserving. Reservation: $25 for 60 days, renewable twice (180 days max).

1

Open the Secretary of State's business entity search

Available through sos.mo.gov — free, searches every LLC, corporation, and reserved name on file.

2

Search core words without the designator

Search "Gateway Woodworks" rather than "Gateway Woodworks LLC" to surface the widest set of potential conflicts.

3

Watch for "too similar" results

If your search returns a name like "Anna's Bakery LLC" when you wanted "Anna Bakery LLC," it may not be considered distinguishable — cosmetic differences often aren't enough.

4

Reserve or file

Clean search + ready to go → file the Articles directly — Missouri doesn't require a reservation first. Clean search + a real delay → the $25 reservation holds it for 60 days.

The $25 Reservation: When It's Worth It

File an Application for Reservation of Name (Form BE-1) with $25 and the Secretary of State holds your name for 60 days. You can renew it twice — each renewal adding another 60 days — for a maximum of 180 days total, after which the same applicant can't extend further. Useful if you're lining up financing or a launch date. But you're not required to reserve before filing — if you're ready now, just go straight to the Articles of Organization and skip the extra $25 and step.

Fictitious Names Are Mandatory If You Use One

This is stricter than most states: under RSMo § 417.200, it is unlawful to transact business in Missouri under any name other than your LLC's true legal name without registering it as a fictitious name first. Many states treat a DBA as optional paperwork; Missouri treats operating under an unregistered name as a violation of law.

Want your LLC to operate under a different brand? File form Corp. 56, "Registration of Fictitious Name," with the Secretary of State for $7 — one of the cheapest DBA filings in the country. It's valid five years and renews for another $7. One LLC can register multiple fictitious names, which is how a single company runs distinct brands.

Ahmad Adil's Take: Missouri's naming rules are among the more straightforward in this whole series — the real thing I want every founder to walk away with is the fictitious name point, because it inverts what people expect. In most states I tell clients "the DBA is optional, register it if you want the protection." In Missouri, if you're operating under anything other than your exact legal LLC name, registering it isn't optional — it's the law, and it only costs $7. If you're planning to market under a brand name that's different from what's on your Articles, budget five minutes and seven dollars for the Corp. 56 filing before you print a single business card.
